LONDON: Reuters, the international news service, is to relocate 50 jobs from its American and British operations to offices in Bangalore, Singapore and Toronto. Most of the jobs being moved are editorial, providing further evidence that the relocation of jobs to cheaper bases overseas is spreading from manufacturing industries and call centres into more professional sectors, including the media and financial services. Reuters' global photo desks will move to Singapore, as will its South American graphics service, currently in Miami. The London-based overnight sports desk will also move to Singapore, while responsibility for repackaging Reuters' wire content as a web format will move from London to Toronto. Production of Reuters' Daybook, a diary service, will move to Bangalore, with the loss of three jobs from the company's Washington operation. Reuters has announced it intends to increase the number of journalists in Bangalore who report on the US equity markets from six to 40, with a loss of about 20 positions in the US and Europe. The moves are part of Reuters' "Fast Forward" drive, announced last year, which aims to cut about 3,000 jobs over three years.
