California: Kamala Harris, the lady of Indian American descent, who recently gained the pleasant attention of U.S. Indians with her rise to the position of Attorney General of California, has laid fresh plans to reach out to the needy people who are affected by mortgage crisis and also plans to reduce the rate of crime, reports Desi Talk. Harris said she was highly satisfied with her record as district attorney of San Francisco, and planned to go statewide with the work she initiated in that post in an exclusive interview to ABC7. She highlighted that her prime priority is tackling mortgage fraud. "We brought over $1 million to San Francisco a couple of years ago to create a stand-alone mortgage fraud unit, building on the work we had been doing which was work of outreach, often to immigrant communities," said Harris who defeated Los Angeles District Attorney Steve Cooley in the November elections. According to ABC7, Harris' term as D.A. saw a dramatic rise in felony convictions including gang and drug sales convictions. In the interview she said she was very proud of her crime prevention programs and hopes to take her 'Back on Track' program statewide as well. The program targets those arrested for the first time for selling small amounts of drugs and help them get jobs and an education. The program reduced reoffense rates from 54 percent to 10 percent in five years, she said. She made her stance clear against capital punishment and asserted that she would follow the law on that like her previous attorneys general who disagreed with it, including incoming Gov. Jerry Brown.
