SAN FRANCISCO: Ram Gupta, head of software development at PeopleSoft, left the company weeks after the business software maker fired its chief executive, the company said on Thursday. PeopleSoft spokesman Steve Swasey would not say whether Gupta, who oversaw PeopleSoft's application and technology infrastructure, resigned or was fired. Swasey would also not comment on whether Gupta's departure, earlier this week was tied to the dismissal of chief executive Craig Conway earlier this month. Gupta reported directly to Conway. Gupta's departure comes as PeopleSoft fights a $7.7-billion hostile takeover bid by Oracle. A US court has allowed the takeover bid to proceed after dismissing antitrust concerns. PeopleSoft has hired Stan Swete, a long-time PeopleSoft executive who retired in 2002, to replace Gupta. Gupta joined the company in 2000. A PeopleSoft board member said last week Conway was fired, in part, after he misled Wall Street analysts by saying Oracle's takeover bid was not affecting the company's business. At the time of his departure, PeopleSoft said Conway was fired after "a loss of confidence" in his ability to lead the company, based in Pleasanton, California. PeopleSoft's board named company founder Dave Duffield as the new chief executive, and Kevin Parker and Phil Wilmington as co-presidents
