Parliament panel meet on spectrum issue

NEW DELHI: The parliamentary standing committee in Information Technology will take up the crucial spectrum management issue and discuss the matter with telecom operators, DoT and Defense Ministry. The Defense Ministry will place its views on Spectrum Management before the Parliamentary Committee followed by a presentation of Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), Association of Unified Telecom Service Providers and others. The committee will also ask telecom operators like BSNL, Reliance Infocomm, Bharti, Hutch and Tata Teleservices for views on spectrum issue, while operators will present their standard viewpoint with regard to all issues, including allocation of spectrum and its criteria, entry fees, band for existing users and future spectrum bands, 3G among others. DoT is in the process of finalizing the spectrum policy; sources said adding the recommendations of the panel (if any) will not be binding on the Department.
