New Hyderabad airport to host aviation academy

Hyderabad:An international aviation academy will come up at the upcoming Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Shamshabad near Hyderabad.
GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd (GHIAL), the developer of the airport, has tied up with Sabena Flight Academy, one of the world's leading independent flight academies based in Brussels, Belgium, to set up the academy at the airport.
The academy will start functioning in 2009. More than 
4.5 billion will be invested over the next three years on the academy, covering infrastructure, including accommodation for more than 200 trainees per year, six flight simulators, cabin trainers and engineering tooling.
A memorandum of understanding to this effect was signed Tuesday between the GHIAL and the Sabena Flight Academy.
The academy will offer complete training packages for aviation-related activities, including pilot and cabin crew training, engine engineers, technicians and aviation consultants, said a statement from the GHIAL.
Training for airport operations staff such as passenger and ramp services agents will also be provided, thus bridging the demand-supply gap in these areas.
"It is our vision that our airport should act as a catalyst for the development of an aviation cluster in Hyderabad. Towards this end, our partnership with Sabena Flight Academy will be a key element," said T. Srinagesh, chief operating officer, GHIAL.
"We are extremely proud of being selected by the GMR group for establishing a state-of-the-art aviation academy in India at the new international airport in Hyderabad. We are looking forward to providing high standard training with a strong accent on flight safety based on our more than sixty years of experience," said Jack Waldeyer, president and CEO of Sabena Flight Academy.
The GHIAL is a joint venture company promoted by the GMR Infrastructure (63 percent) Malaysian Airports Holding Berhad (11 percent), Airports Authority of India (13 percent) and Government of Andhra Pradesh (13 percent).
The airport, costing 24.78 billion in the first phase, is scheduled to commence operations on March 16 next year.
The airport is coming up over 5,500 acres in Shamshabad, about 25 km from the city. It is being designed to handle 12 million passengers in a year.
