NEW DELHI: With the upheaval caused by the sexual assault and murder of a call center employee in Bangalore, Nasscom is looking at broadening the scope of the National Employee Registry to include vendor employees as well.

This action will help call center companies to run verification checks on the employees of transport and security agencies they hire.

The apex body of information technology industry Nasscom is launching the registry, which will be released in January, in collaboration with National Securities Depository (NSDL). It will contain employment data on the BPO industry. Other IT sectors will be covered later. Though the fee structure for companies seeking access to the registry database hasn't been decided as yet.

The revenue generated from this will be shared by Nasscom and NSDL. The registry will address the security concerns associated with the industry. There have been many reports of fake resumes. Moreover, public databases are few and courts and police information is rarely available online. While the BPO employee database will be voluntary, the vendor database will be mandatory.

It will include details such as the name, educational qualification, professional qualification, previous employment information, photograph and fingerprint on the NSDL database. Prospective employers can then choose to run background checks on the candidate. In the second phase, the database will include a separate section on pending criminal cases.
