Multipurpose Identity Cards to be issued to every Indian citizen
New Delhi: Multipurpose National Identity Cards (MNIC) will be issued to every Indian Citizen by the year 2011, when the National Population Register will be ready, said the Union Home Minister P Chidambaram. The initiative is taken to have a control over the illegal immigration and the uninterrupted penetration of terrorists into the country. These cards will provide a unique national identity number to every citizen registered in the National Population Register. Chidambaram said, "The National Population Register will be ready by 2011 and the Multipurpose National Identity Cards (MNIC) will be issued to all residents in 2011." A secured microprocessor chip will be framed in the card by the recommendation of the Technical Committee constituted by the government having representatives from National Informatics Centre, IIT Kanpur, Bharat Electronics, Indian Telephone Industries, Electronics Corporation of India, Intelligence Bureau and some others. A pilot project has already been launched in some select areas of 12 states and one Union territory, covering a population of around 30.95 lakhs.
