NEW DELHI: US communication giant Motorola today said it will launch $30 (1300) handsets in India, aimed at increasing the penetration of Mobile Phones in the country. Motorola and the GSM Association (GSMA) presented the affordable-phone concept to Communications and IT Minister Dayanidhi Maran during his visit to Cannes for a GSM conference last week. The two plan to jointly launch the phones in emerging markets, including India, where basic cellular phones are out of bounds for many. Despite being the second largest mobile phone market, growth of mobile telephony has largely been restricted to urban and semi-urban areas. India's mobile subscriber base touched 48 million in December 2004, with over 1.6 million subscribers added every month. "Roaming is the USP of GSM phones and it must be made more affordable for consumers," he told the GSMA board members at a meeting. Maran, also held meetings with chiefs of handset makers Alcatel, Ericsson, Lucent, Motorola, Nokia and Nortel.
