Most Influential People Who Helped Curb Armed Violence


Bangalore: The world today has witnessed all forms of violence that prevail in almost all corners of the globe. Armed violence is one such form of violence which has already taken the lives of more than 526,000 people, with one in ten was killed in conflict zones. Many influential personalities from nook and corners of the world have come forward to combat such inhumane acts and to restore peace in the world. Henry Dodd of AOAV (Action on Armed Violence) recently listed 100 most influential personalities who curbed armed violence in the world. Here is a glimpse of few personalities who helped curb such violence.

Dalai Lama

The 14th Dalai Lama, Lhamo Dondrub who is the chief monk of the Gelupga lineage of Tibetan Buddhism is an international social activist. He is a well known personality and the peace campaigner who is recognized worldwide.

The Dalai Lama is included in the list of the most influential people in controlling armed violence mainly for his contributions towards bringing peace and unity throughout the world by spreading his words on non-violence and religious harmony. For the tireless efforts during the struggle of the liberation of Tibet and also for implementing peaceful resolutions without the use of violence, he was awarded with the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 and later in 2007 The Dalai lama was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal.

Malala Yousafzai

Today, most of the countries have come to terms with the fact that women too are important members of the society, who should be given all the privileges which are enjoyed by the men, like education and freedom. But there are some parts of the world where this notion has still not come into existence. Malala Yousafzai is one such young girl of just 15 years of age from Pakistan, who was targeted and shot down by the Taliban armed personnel for she stood up to fight for educational and women’s rights. Due to her strong will power to bring a change in the lives of women, she escaped death and still works for advocating the right of girls to get basic education. This in spite of the repeated threat she received from the gunmen. Malala is the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in the history of the world.
