Miss India New York 2010 crown goes to journalist

New York: Sabrina Bachai, 23, of Long Island, was crowned Maaza Miss India New York 2010 in a scintillating and gleaming function at the Community Center Auditorium in Flushing, Queens which also saw Chandan Kaur, 22, of Queens as first runner-up and Noopoor Akruwala, 17, of Long Island as second runner-up, reports Desi Talk. Sabrina, the new Miss India New York was born in New York to parents from India and Guyana and works as a journalist after graduating from New York University. A press release from the organizers also said Aman Kaur of Long Island was crowned Miss Teen India New York, and Amrit Kaur and Sneha Suri, also of Long Island, were declared the first and second runners-up respectively. The winners of the Miss India contest go on to represent New York at the 29th Miss India USA pageant to be held Dec. 12 at Royal Albert's Palace in Fords, N.J. The winner of the Miss India USA contest will compete in the 20th Miss India Worldwide competition to be held April 27 in Dubai. The New York event opened with the song 'Happening' from the film 'Main Aur Mrs. Khanna' performed by outgoing Maaza Miss India New York Anuradha Maharaj, who led the contenders on to the stage. Victoria Gomes, outgoing Miss Teen India New York led the teen contestants to the opening number, 'Dola Re Dola' from "Devdas." Contestants took part in the Indian segment, evening gown segment and talent round during which the audience and the judges got to know more about them and their accomplishments. While Gunjan Kaur was named Miss Beautiful Smile in the teen section, Aman Kaur was named Miss Beautiful Eyes and Amrit Kaur was named Miss Photogenic and Best Talent. The panel of judges included Raaj Grover, Bollywood producer; Anita Bhat, president of Miss India Connecticut; Rohan Narine , journalist; Sandy Bhatia, vice president, Citibank; and Niharica Raizada, reigning Miss India U.K. and also first-runner up in Miss India Worldwide. The show was choreographed by Nishi Bahl and Shilpa Jhurani, and the event was emceed by Neha Multani, Tanzie Variava and Tina Kaur.
