CHANDIGARH: Maruti Udyog Ltd, India's largest carmaker, is likely to invest 18 billion on a new plant in Haryana, company sources said Wednesday. The Haryana government has sanctioned 600 acres of land for the mega project, said the sources. Maruti, the local unit of Japanese auto giant Suzuki Motor Corp, has a large manufacturing plant in Gurgaon industrial area adjoining the Indian capital. The new plant is also likely to be located in Gurgaon district. Maruti makes a dozen car models in India including the popular hatchback Maruti 800. Others include Omni van, Gypsy, Zen and mid-segment luxury car Esteem. The new Maruti plant would generate more jobs for youths in Haryana, Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala said. It would also help Haryana generate more revenues, he said. The new project would be set up on similar lines as the earlier one. Company sources said the new plant would start production of newer car models or re-designed versions of older ones in the new plant.
