Malayalam writer Sethumadhavan wins Vayalar Award

Thiruvananthapuram: Noted Malayalam writer A. Sethumadhavan has been selected for this year's prestigious Vayalar Rama Varma Award for his novel "Adyalangal".

M.K. Sanu, a trustee of Vayalar Rama Varma Trust, announced Sethu's name for the award here Monday.

The award carries a cash prize of 25,000 and a citation.

"Adyalangal" centres around the change that has taken place in Kerala women in a span of 30 years.

"This is the first award instituted in the name of a great personality and hence this is a great honour for me. Awards like these help to make the work popular making more people read it," reacted Sethu, upon hearing the announcement.

Sethu's other literary works include "Pandavapuram", "Velutha Koodarangal", "Pedi Swapnangal", "Thaliyola", "Kiratham", "Niyogam", "Sethuvinte Kathakal" and "Kaimudrakal".

He had received the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Awards in 1982 and 1978 for his works "Pandavapuram" and "Pediswapnangal" respectively. He was a member of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi in 1991.

Sethu, 64, retired as chairman of South Indian Bank last year. He also served as assistant general manager of the State Bank of Travancore and State Bank of Hyderabad.
