Lufthansa to recruit more Indian flight attendants

Mumbai: Premier German carrier Lufthansa is planning to recruit 40 Indian flight attendants to provide "culture specific" services to its Indian passengers on its seven Indian destinations. "With the current successful business performance resulting in our active fleet and route expansion, the company plans to increase the recruitment of Indian crew this year," said Lufthansa South Asia director Werner Heesen. Heesen felt hiring Indian crew will help the carrier comprehend the cultural specifics of the region. "This will also help our customers feel comfortable on board and enable them to speak in their language," he said. Lufthansa presently employs close to 200 Indian flight attendants and approximately 15,000 flight attendants from more than 45 countries around the world. For Asia-Pacific, around 700 flight attendants from Japan, Korea, China, Thailand and India exclusively service the flight routes of their respective countries. The airline has introduced a new range of Indian cuisine, including pure vegetarian meals, and Hindi in-flight entertainment, which offers latest Indian movies and music. Earlier this month, the airline announced increase in services between Kolkata and Frankfurt from three to five flights a week effective June 3 by adding flights on Wednesdays and Sundays. Lufthansa also plans to introduce July 1 new non-stop flights between Pune and Frankfurt. The new six weekly return flights will be operated by an Airbus A319, which offers a total of 48 seats in an all-business class configuration. Lufthansa currently offers flights between Delhi and Frankfurt, Delhi and Munich, Mumbai and Frankfurt, Chennai and Frankfurt, Bangalore and Frankfurt, Hyderabad and Frankfurt and Kolkata and Frankfurt. In addition, its partner Swiss International Air Lines offers flights on the Delhi- Zurich and Mumbai-Zurich lines. Together with Swiss, Lufthansa will offer a maximum of 68 flights a week from India to Europe via its three efficient hubs - Frankfurt, Munich and Zurich, during summer 2008.
