LONDON: Amicus/UNIFI have expressed regret at the announcement today that Lloyds TSB is to off shore 1,000 jobs as part of the company's on going policy of exporting work to India. The union has been fully consulted over Lloyds TSB's plans under the terms of a ground-breaking offshoring agreement signed earlier this year. The agreement commits LTSB to offer an alternative job and the opportunity to retrain to any staff affected by offshoring if they want to stay in the company.

Amicus/UNIFI official Iain MacLean said: "We always regret any jobs going abroad and we will be pressing the company to ensure that any staff whose jobs have gone who wish to stay with Lloyds TSB are offered alternative work."

This latest move by Lloyds TSB will bring the number of jobs exported to between 2000 and 2500 by the end of 2005.

The new plans will affect Group Operations, General Insurance, Group IT and Cheltenham & Gloucester. Lloyds TSB are set to close a call centre in Newcastle by the end of this year with the loss of 1,000 jobs.

Campaigns by Amicus UNIFI have won access to retraining and reloction for staff. Any displaced employee wishing to stay working for the bank have been offered alternative employment.

Amicus UNIFI wants to ensure that the level of consultation that the union has been given by Lloyds TSB is rolled out to other employers in the finance sector who intend to off shore work. "Unions can make a difference to a company's offshoring plans if they are consulted early enough. Job losses can be kept to a minimum and the type of re-training programmes and alternative job offers available are considerable better with union input," added Maclean.
