Kids of Indian Defence Personnel Reluctant to go their Parent's Way

Indian Armed Forces, which is short of soldiers, sailors and senior officers, has started to market itself as career options. The 3 wings (Navy, Army and Air Force) have been approaching colleges and schools for campus recruitment attracting youth by organizing rock shows. One such rock show was recently organized in Guwahati with a theme "Join Indian Army" motivating youth to consider a career in the armed forces. Defence academies, which used to get overflowing applications from all over the nation a couple of decades ago has been forced to adopt branding strategies to draw in youth.

Even parents have been found keeping away from defence career for their wards. A housewife of an Air Force personnel said, “I have experienced the toils my husband faces. I don’t want my son to go through the same. Also the accommodation is inadequate. My son will become an engineer and will serve the nation with his technical skills.”

A 20 year old Research Analyst working in an MNC and son of a Navy Personnel feels that defence job is not adventurous and challenging. Adding to that he said, “Army and Air force looks cool only in movies like Veer-Zaara and Jab Tak Hai Jaan. But the reality is grim.”
