New Delhi: The Planning Commission has fixed Kerala's annual plan for 2009-10 at 86.60 billion (8,660 crore), Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan said here Tuesday.

During his meeting with Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia, he said Kerala needed a substantial annual plan for 2009-10 as the state faces a crisis due to the economic recession.

Referring to the fall in prices of coffee, coir, pepper, rubber and spices and the crisis in the Gulf countries, where thousands of Keralites work, the chief minister said: "We are in the midst of a severe world recession. We need a large annual plan to counter the adverse developments."

The plan panel has allocated more funds than what the state had sought - 86.50 billion (8,650 crore).
