BANGALORE: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, who is here on a private visit, took time off Thursday to visit top IT companies Infosys and Wipro for a first hand account of their successful operations and to woo them to invest in his state.

Accompanied by his nephew and union Communications & IT Minister Dayanidhi Maran, Karunanidhi called on Wipro czar Azim Premji and Infosys Deputy Managing Director Krish Gopalakrishnan in their campuses on the outskirts of Bangalore.

"In a bid to attract more IT firms and investments in Tamil Nadu, the DMK government is drafting a new IT policy that will include measures which contributed to the success of the knowledge sector in Karnataka, especially Bangalore, the country's tech hub.

"An IT task force will also be set up to study and incorporate the features that made Bangalore a global brand in the knowledge sector. We are keen to replicate its success in our state," Karunanidhi told reporters later.

Assuring his government's full support to investors in terms of land, infrastructure and incentives, the 83-year-old DMK patriarch invited Wipro and Infosys to expand their operations in Tamil Nadu, preferably in secondary cities like Trichy, Madurai and Coimbatore.

"Prior to finalising our new IT policy, we have decided to elicit the views of the IT captains on the industry requirements so that they could consider investing in our state to set up new facility or expand their existing operations," Karunanidhi pointed out.

After going around the Wipro facility, Karunanidhi and Maran held a series of meetings with the IT bellwether's top officials. Premji agreed to expand the company's operations in Chennai and Coimbatore and sought additional land in both the cities.

At Infosys, Karunanidhi and Maran took a buggy ride in its 85-acre sprawling campus and acquainted themselves with the company's various activities. Company's director and head of HR, infrastructure and education T.V. Mohandas Pai made a presentation on its global delivery model and how the business is conducted worldwide.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy had also recently visited here to woo IT companies to his state.
