Karnataka to unveil hardware policy

CHENNAI: The Karnataka secretary - IT, Biotechnology and Science & Technology, M K Shankaralinge Gowda, today said his government will unveil a new hardware policy soon and would set up a hardware park for the growth of the industry and also to step up hardware exports.

"It is right that we are looking at hardware sector. Hardware industry also needs to grow along with the software segment. The government of Karnataka is working on a industry-friendly hardware policy, which is expected to be unveiled by this November. We will also set up a hardware park to promote the industry," Gowda said while addressing a meeting conducted here to promote BangaloreIT.com.

Gowda said that the government has identified 1000 acres of land near the Bangalore International Airport for setting up the hardware park.

Hardware exports from Karnataka (mainly from Bangalore) increased to 1700 crore from (36 companies) during 2003-04 from 1404 crore (from 31 companies) in 2002-03.

Telecom hardware exports offer great potential. We are looking cluster approach to step up telecom hardware exports from the state, he added.

We need to look at newer markets to be a major player in hardware exports said Gowda adding, the hardware exporting companies will be expanding their markets to China, Taiwan, Singapore and Hong Kong.
