New Delhi: Former Commonwealth Games (CWG) Organising Committee chief Suresh Kalmadi was being questioned by the CBI in connection with alleged irregularities related to contracts awarded in connection with the games, an official said, denying media reports that he has been arrested.

After skipping questioning thrice, Kalmadi appeared at the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) headquarters here Monday morning and was being questioned by the CBI sleuths.

When asked if the parliamentarian has been arrested, a CBI official, said: "He has not been arrested yet."

Kalmadi's lawyer Hitesh Jain said he was at the CBI headquarters to reply to questions related to TSR (timing scoring and result) equipment scam.

"As far as we know, it (Kalmadi's arrest) is still speculation as long as we are not informed and I would not like to speculate on any position," lawyer Jain told a TV channel.

Meanwhile, Bharatiya Janata Party spokesperson Prakash Javadekar, reacting to media reports about Kalmadi's arrest, described it as "belated but welcome".

He told NDTV channel that "this is definitely a belated but welcome step".

Further, Javadekar said there should be similar action against other people. "We demand that action against Delhi chief minister (Sheila Dikshit) and other senior bureaucrats involved in the loot should also be taken."

Kalmadi was summoned to the CBI headquarters April 15 but had to go out of station on that day, an official told IANS. He was then called Tuesday, April 19, but could not make it. Yet again, he failed to appear before the CBI for questioning April 20, saying he was unwell.

Kalmadi was earlier questioned in connection with alleged irregularities in hiring AM Films and AM Car and Van Hire Limited during the Queen's Baton Relay in 2009.

The Commonwealth Games were held in Delhi from Oct 3-14 last year.
