NEW DELHI: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalitha will address captains of the Indian industry Friday when they get together in Chennai to brainstorm on the state of the economy. Jayalalitha will deliver a special address at the national council meeting of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), according to a statement from the leading industry lobby. The meeting, to be presided over by CII president Anand G. Mahindra, will focus on Tamil Nadu's industrialisation and development even as the CEOs dwell on global issues like World Trade Organisation negotiations in the run up to the WTO ministerial round at Cancun. The state of the Indian economy will be debated on and reviewed by the council. The CII is optimistic of an upswing in the economy with the growth of the industrial sector in the gross domestic product (GDP) by 6.0 percent, compared to 3.3 percent in the previous year. "Despite this improvement, the headline GDP numbers have been disappointing due to the poor performance of the agricultural sector," CII said. Negative agricultural growth last year because of a severe and widespread drought pulled down India's economic growth to just 4.4 percent. The council will also debate challenges relating to education, training and human resource development.
