New Delhi: The Durbar Suite of the Raj Palace Hotel, Jaipur has been voted Asia's Leading Suite at the World Travel Awards ceremony at Shanghai.

A total of 167,000 travel professionals, including 110,000 travel agents worldwide, took part in the voting process. Other Indian suites to make it to the Top Ten included Kohinoor Suite at The Oberoi Udaivilas, Udaipur, Maharaja Suite at The Leela Palace Kempinski, Bangalore, Presidential Villa at Kumarakom Lake Resort and Royal Imperial Suite at The Imperial, New Delhi.

The high point of the suite is a private museum displaying the old throne and bolsters of the ruler, along with gold and silver furniture, gold leafed painted walls with overhanging jharokas, a press release from The Raj Palace said.

The Raj Palace Hotel was the winner of "Best Heritage Hotel in India" at the National Tourism Award 2007. In 1995, Princess Jayendra Kumari decided to restore the luxurious palace into a heritage hotel. The property has the distinction of being the first museum suite palace hotel of the world.

The palace hotel - built in 1727 by Thakur Mohan singh and the oldest mansion of the city - is also the only one in India to make it to the Small Luxury Hotels of the World. World Travel awards are the most comprehensive and prestigious awards programmes in global travel industry. Travel professionals regard the awards as the best endorsement any travel product can receive.
