India's Mobile Market Poor But Innovative: World Bank


In India, out of the 70 subscriptions per 100 people, 96 percent have a prepaid connection while only 53 percent households have mobile phones. The mobile phone networks in India cover 83 percent of the area that is long behind other countries. In the same way, the time spent talking on mobile phone is 330 minutes that isles than 425 minutes spent in most of the other countries. This comes as an astonishing fact since the calling rate in India stands lowest at $0.01. India however lags far behind many other countries in using mobile internet, just 3.3 percent.

Even though India has the highest average mobile data speed, higher than all the developing countries and even countries like China and US, the Smartphone market has failed to mark its solid presence in the Indian market, whereas Singapore has 90 percent its population using Smartphone.

The report has praise the efforts of the Kerala government’s mobile program and the introduction of cheap Aakash tablets for students. Electronic cash transfers by Indian government are another area of growth and the report has estimated that around 7 million indirect jobs will be generated in the mobile industry.
