BANGALORE: India's space agency will host an international telemedicine conference here in March 2005, an official said Monday. Being held for the first time in India, "INTELMEDINDIA-2005" being organised by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) during Mar 17-19 will have the theme "Telemedicine for Global Health Care". It will focus on healthcare delivery through the technology-based system of telemedicine or tele-health for benefiting populations in rural and remote areas. "The conference is being held to create awareness among all the stakeholders about the benefits of telemedicine technology as an effective tool for healthcare delivery and to evolve recommendations for setting up telemedicine facility in India and other developing countries," an ISRO spokesman said. To be attended by about 800 delegates, including 60 from abroad, the meet will discuss healthcare requirements in South Asian Association of Regional Cooperation (SAARC) countries, Africa and Southeast Asia and provide insight into developing telemedicine in these countries. "ISRO has been spearheading the satellite-based telemedicine programme in the country with about 60 district hospitals connected to 20 super speciality hospitals in major cities using the INSAT-3A and 3B satellites. "The advantage of telemedicine in reaching out to rural and remote populations has been well established through the experience of this network," the spokesman said.
