Bangalore: Indian Constitution, the longest written roughly constitution of any sovereign country in the world took 2 years 11 month and 17 days to get drafted and finalized before it is completely adopted on 26 January 1950.

With the implementation of Constitution, the Union of India officially became Republic of India, the most populous democracy in the world.

The making of Constitution was done mainly under three committees, namely the Union Powers Committee, the Union Constitution Committee and the Committee on Fundamental Rights and it was drafted by the Constituent assembly.

The assembly had 308 members including representatives from all the communities and classes across India. Jawaharlal Nehru, C. Rajagopalachari, Rajendra Prasad, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Moulana Abul Kalam Azad were some important figures in the assembly. The first president of the assembly was Dr Sachidanand Sinha and later Rajendra Prasad was elected as the president.

The first drafting committee was appointed on 29 August 1947 with Dr. B.R. Ambedkar as the chairman along with six other members. The committee submitted its first drafted Constitution to the assembly on 4 November 1947.

The assembly met in sessions for 166 days spread about a period of 3 years. After many deliberations and modifications, on 24 January 1950, all members of the assembly signed 2 copies of the document, one in English and another in Hindi. Two days later, on January 26, it became the law of all states and territories of India.
