Indian Community of Niles honors senior citizens

Chicago: More than 200 senior citizens were honored each with a winter gift bag, a brief entertainment and a sumptuous vegetarian lunch to celebrate the annual Thanksgiving Day hosted jointly by Indian Community of Niles Township and Indo-American Center, reports J.V Lakshmana Rao of India Tribune. The event which reflected the Indian tradition was held at the central hall of the Indo-American Center. Usha Kamaria, President of the Indian Community of Niles Township, addressed the event and said that the senior citizens deserved all the honor and respect for the sacrifices they had made in bringing up their children. She said that Thanksgiving Day was a great opportunity for all to honor their parents and celebrate their success. "Our parents had worked hard, spent all their earnings on us so that we live in comfort. If we have come to the US for jobs or businesses and have been living in comfort, it is because of our parents." Jay Luthra, executive director of Indo-American Center, said that Thanksgiving Day celebration was a great opportunity for all youngsters to express their love and gratitude to senior citizens. He thanked Usha Kamaria and all the members of the Indian Community of Niles Township in joining the Indo-American Center in celebrating Thanksgiving Day. Satish Chander of Indian Community of Niles Township said that it was the tradition of Indians to respect their seniors with gifts, as exemplified in Mahabharat by Sudama, a childhood friend of Lord Krishna, in offering a gift of beaten rice, when the former met the latter after several years. Ramanbhai Patel, a businessman and president of United Senior Pariwar, said that the celebration of Thanksgiving Day marked the family reunion, when all the family members would meet and dine together with a sense of enjoying their togetherness.
