Indian Juvenile homes Increasing the Criminal Tendency in Children?

Some believe it is the lack of recreational facilities, leading juveniles to get destructive instead of being creative. Children start getting these thoughts once they are taken into the centre as they are not occupied by any activities.

Asha Mukundan, assistant professor with the Centre for Criminology and Justice, Tata Institute of Social Sciences said, “You have to deal with the mindset of juvenile offenders. But our special homes are not equipped for this. They claim that they provide vocational training and educational classes. But the fact is that they don’t achieve any purpose other than keeping the juveniles engaged for some time. They are adolescent boys with lots of energy. When it does not get channelized towards any positive activity, they become destructive. They do all kinds of things to seek attention.”

Many NGO’s are working to help juveniles correct themselves and live in the society. ECHO an organization in Bangalore has trained more than 135 juveniles who are now working as traffic police assistants.

Individual care and attention will help these children to get back normal lifestyle. It is also the duty of the officials to inculcate good qualities in kids within the 3year term. This would help to reduce crime and will also save the lives of juveniles.
