Indian Cities Worst Affected With Life-Threatening Air Pollutants

Manas Ranjan Ray, head of department of Hematology, CNCI said, “AM levels are studied by testing the sputum of a person. As it's a non-invasive procedure, subjects agree to give their samples. It's also a great bio-indicator for pollution exposure. Since AMs are defence cells, they increase in large numbers whenever there is an attack from infections," reports TOI.

Among the metropolitan cities, Delhi and Kolkata are the worst affected ones with air pollution, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) confirmed. The council affirms that, about 223,000 people died of lung cancer caused by air pollution, globally.

Ray also stated that air pollution is compromising immune systems of people in cities considerably. "We found depression incidence to be twice high in Delhi as compared to the control group. Our study shows this is linked to air pollution. Liver and kidney function is also affected,” added Ray.
