NEW DELHI: Major Indian handicrafts and gift manufacturing companies will showcase their products at the three-day Cadeaux Fair beginning at Leipzig, Germany, on Saturday. The international gift and consumer product fair will see original life-style designs developed by participating Indian companies with the help of German designers associated with the National Center for Design and Product Development. "The lifestyle products focusing on latest designs have been developed with the help of Indian exporting companies and are trendsetters for year 2003," according to Indo-German Export Promotion Project (IGEP) which is behind the efforts to promote Indian exports to Germany. The main aim of developing new designs is to change the existing export basket of the Indian handicraft exporters to enable them make inroads into the global market. During 2001-02, India's handicrafts exports registered 2.67 percent dip to 67.69 billion for the first time. During April-August this year, handicrafts exports have been looking up, with a 12.02 percent rise in rupee terms. In the first five-months of the current fiscal, 25.66 billion worth of handicrafts were exported against 22.91 billion during the same period in 2001-02. The Cadeaux Fair is one the fastest growing trade fairs in Europe in the field of gift and consumer articles. Leipzig, situated in the center of Europe, is called the gateway between the east and west of Europe. "This creates exciting possibilities for Indian companies to target the markets of Eastern Europe, where the consumer boom is starting with greater purchasing power," stated IGEP. The designs to be displayed at the Cadeaux include a wide range of lifestyle and home products made from wood, iron and stainless steel, textiles and jute.
