India pushes Dhaka to open up to investors

Dhaka: Bangladesh can attract more foreign investment, especially from India, by providing the services that investors want, India's envoy to Dhaka has said here. Indian High Commissioner Pinak Ranjan Chakravarty told Chief Adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed's Special Assistant for Tourism Mahbub Jamil that Dhaka should abide by the air services agreement between the two countries "for its own sake" to enhance air traffic, the New Age newspaper reported Thursday. Chakravarty met Jamil here Wednesday. "Bangladesh also can attract more foreign investment by ensuring services as per demand of the investors," the envoy said. The two discussed matters of mutual interest as well as intellectual property rights, application of copyright laws and implementation of the air services agreement. Bangladesh's recently-launched private airlines are eyeing the Indian market in competition with the state-run Biman Bangladesh International and have announced plans to fly to Indian destinations.
