India Leaves Japan Behind, Becomes The Third Largest Smartphone Market In The World


The raise of India as a Smartphone powerhouse is due to its huge population, the affordability of the Smartphones, competition between manufacturers and parallel market saturation in developed markets such as Japan and Europe.

Though Samsung and Apple brands driving the market in the country, the report also says that the demotic players like Micromax, Karbonn, and Spice are in league too with a growth rate of between 200 percent and 500 percent on an annual basis. The local market also has what it describes as an “extra long tail of Indian microvendors” — such as Lemon Mobile — that it says is surging at 1000 percent YoY growth. “They are almost all using Android software, which captured 89 percent share of the entire market in the quarter,” the analyst added.
