New Delhi: The IDC's India Quarterly PC Tracker reported a growth of 22.1 percent in sales of personal computers (PCs), including desktops and notebooks, when compared with 2006. The PC sales have touched 1.53 million units at the end of the first quarter of 2007 (April-June). While desktop PC shipments clocked 11.3 percent growth, notebook PC shipments registered 73.1 percent growth. During the April-June 2007 period, the market was driven by the growth in the notebook PC segment that is expected to corner 40 percent share of the overall client PC market in the country by 2010. The consumer (home users) notebook segment has increased from 29 percent to 32 percent. Piyush Pushkal, Manager, Computing Products Research, IDC India, said, "Notebook PC purchases will be influenced by brand value and service capabilities." The company said the small and medium enterprises (SMEs), education and consumer segments will continue to drive the growth in the notebook PC category. Among PC vendors, Hewlett-Packard (HP) retained the top spot with a market share of 22.2 percent, as the rankings for the overall client PC (notebooks and desktops combined) remained unchanged. HCL bagged the second spot with 12.8 percent, followed by Lenovo at 10.3 percent in terms of unit shipments during the second quarter of 2007.
