Chennai: India's second largest car maker Hyundai Motor India (HMIL) Tuesday sold its two millionth car in the domestic market.

HMIL, a wholly owned subsidiary of South Korean Hyundai Motors, started production in 1998 at its Irrungattukottai factory near here rolling out the popular Santro.

"Today is a red-letter day for all of us at Hyundai family. Needless to say we will continue to build brand Hyundai in the market here and bring in the best of products and technology," said H.W. Park, HMIL managing director and CEO.

In December 2009, HMIL touched the milestone of fastest production and sales of 2.5 million units (exports and domestic sales). With these achievements, HMIL becomes only the second manufacturer in India to have achieved these distinctions.

HMIL at present markets seven models of passenger cars across segments. The A2 segment includes the Santro, i10 and the i20, the A3 segment the Accent and the Verna Transform, the A5 segment the Sonata Transform and the sports utility vehicle (SUV) segment the Santa Fe.
