Hyderabad to have metro rail by 2009

Hyderabad: Work on the much-awaited Hyderabad metro rail will commence in June as the Andhra Pradesh cabinet Saturday approved a 
87.60 billion project to decongest this booming city and IT hub.
The first phase of the project, covering a stretch of 66 km and connecting three busy routes in the city, will be completed by April 2009.
Minister for Information and Public Relations Mohammed Ali Shabbir told reporters after the cabinet meeting that the project, which will have 63 stations, would be implemented in the public-private partnership mode on a build, operate and transfer (BOT) basis.
Five consortia, comprising national and international companies, had pre-qualified for the project and bid documents will be issued to them after getting approval from the central government.
The cabinet meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, gave its nod for forming a special purpose vehicle (SPV) for the project.
With an average cost of 1.32 billion per kilometer, the project will involve construction of stations at an interval of a kilometer. The elevated stations will have modern amenities and escalators and elevators for easy access.
In another move to improve civic infrastructure in the city, the cabinet cleared the second phase of the outer ring road project. The second phase, covering 61.8 km, is estimated to cost 17.41 billion.
The work on the first phase of the world-class outer ring is already on.
The cabinet also allotted 50 acres of land to Bearing Corporation of Russia to set up a unit in Ranga Reddy district near Hyderabad.
