Hewlett Packard bags Himachal area network project

Shimla: Hewlett Packard (HP) has bagged the prestigious 
468 million Himachal State Wide Area Network (HIMSWAN) project, beating six other bidders, including Tata Consultancy Services and Wipro, top government officials said on Tuesday.
Among the other six bidders were HCL, Bharti Airtel, Tulip IT and Bel. Some of them bid over 800 million but HP went down to 468 million.
Excited officials of the state IT department are describing the deal as the lowest in such deals in the country and a benchmark for further projects.
Juniper and Norton will provide the networking equipment to HP. The network is expected to be in place by April next year, officials said.
The dedicated network will provide network down to the district, block and, tehsil and sub-tehsil local levels connecting some 3,000 government offices with 131 points of presence including wireless connectivity.
Video conferencing, which is already available in district headquarters, will now penetrate some of the remotest corners of the hill state once the state data centre is set up.
Bhartat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) will provide connectivity up to the points of presence. A deal with BSNL has already been signed.
