CHANDIGARH: Haryana is to establish a new facility to store fruit and vegetables to encourage farmers switch to cash crops from paddy and wheat.

The Haryana State Industrial Development Corporation would establish the facility on a 113-acre site at Teja Khera in Sirsa district, 180 km from here.

He said the facility was being created as many farmers had switched to growing fruits and vegetables as part of the government's crop diversification programme.

The state government has been urging farmers to diversify from cultivating wheat and paddy as these did not get them good prices.

Instead, farmers were being encouraged to cultivate fruits, vegetables other than cash crops in view of the high demand for these in the neighbouring states of Delhi, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.
