Happy Birthday! DOS

Bangalore: DOS (Disk operating system) celebrated its 30th birthday on July 27th .
Thirty years ago on 27th July 1981, Microsoft bought the rights for DOS from Seattle Computer Products for $ 25,000. It was then known as QDOS (Quick and Dirty Operating System). Which was later changed into DOS by Bill Gates and Co, DOS was designed by Seattle Computer Products to run on Intel 8086 processor, and was originally rolled together in just two months for a 0.1 launch in 1980.
In 1979, Seattle Computer Products had launched a processor which was intended to run Digital Research's CP/M-86 operating system, but the chip was ready months ahead of Digital Research's software. Therefore in 1980, Tim Paterson from SPM came up with basic OS software that would compensate a stopgap.
At that time Microsoft paid a price of $75,000 for OS software. But Microsoft did not reveal to SCP that it has planned to supply the software to IBM -- in place of the Digital Research OS that had inspired the creation of QDOS in the first place.
In 1982 Paterson joined Microsoft at the time for the first launch of the software MS-DOS. From that time Microsoft went on to conquering the world of personal computing, and in 1986 Microsoft finally took complete ownership of the software and paid a price of $925,000. Microsoft agreed on the legal settlement with SCP's original boss.
MS-DOS provided the foundation for Windows, Microsoft's all-conquering operating system turned 25 last year.
