HCL Technologies shows door to 450 people in India

HCL Technologies shows door to 450 people in India
New Delhi: India's IT services firm HCL Technologies has shown door to 450 employees at its Delhi and Bangalore offices. A majority of those axed were on the bench- the buffer of employees kept on the rolls for new projects, reports The Economic Times (ET).

An HCL Technologies official told ET that the company had sacked 400 people in Delhi and another 50 in Bangalore in the last one-two months. The firm had earlier asked those on the bench, to get assigned to projects or face the prospect of being asked to leave the firm, he said.

In an email reply, a company spokeswoman didn't comment on the number of people sacked by the company but indicated that the move was linked to the performance of employees. "HCL follows a systematic process of performance review and development, and the expectation of the organization is for employees to meet the stringent performance standards. This is a routine and ongoing process," she said.

As of December 31, 2008, HCL had about 52,957 employees. The global downturn has impacted the revenues of clients of Indian IT companies, thereby dampening demand for software services.

1: With due respect to all - My response has three aspects:-

1)Even at this time most of the IT organizations face shortage of efficient people (check Nasscom report). People who do not have jobs temporarily, should go ahead and sharpen their skills and get certified in the areas of Domain, Technology and Process. They will be sure to get another job in short time.

2)People from non-IT background and industry need to stop getting pleasures out of this short term downturn of IT industry. They need to digest the fact of different industries and their related pros & cons on a professional. IT has its related benefits which are also passed on to people who service them. It is a sadist approach to condemn them at current market conditions. We need to realize that everyone has chosen profession of their choice, hence perks and benefits are different. IT services has been founded on a different premise, which is to service overseas clients (primarily, changing now) and certain benefits are packaged owing to this nature of business. This is pure mediocrity of people who could not make it to the so called better world and getting pleasure out of a slowdown of a booming industry. I pity them as they are missing the big picture as to how this has transformed our country's economy - and how it is impacted today. Should we celebrate or work towards changing this to a better future?

3)My last comment is to the Organizations – who are equally responsible for this troubled state. They all had extravagant expenditures and very slim control. An IT organization has two major components – Cost (People, Overheads, Real Estate and Taxes) and Revenue (charged from their clients in different forms). They were doing well as long as business was good and money was flowing in. Each one of them got challenged by increasing costs, which they seldom looked at controlling and even restricting. Hence their margins dipped, in some cases even to negative. There was no choice other than cutting the cost and the easiest way to cut the cost was – chopping the human capital itself, which has direct impact on the cost. This is an escapist route and they know it. Organizations should take up the responsibility as they were not operationally efficient and landed into this situation where they have to reduce the number of people in the name of sub optimal resources or people on bench.

So people stop crying – it is always a joint responsibility to run a country, manage an economy and efficiently running an organization. Somewhere, we too are responsible – let us retrospect and ask a question to ourselves – DID WE TAKE IT EASY?

Don't make cry, wait and have patience, When you people are getting hefty salaries, incentives,foreign trips(becos of that so many middle class family/people have toured foreign countries, which was enjoyed/purely for/of business/capitalist people)discount/sodex coupons and enjoyed over the moon like, now feeling the pinch and earlier when you are in jovial moode, you are reluctant to talk/join to other dept./other sections of the working people(like accountants,clerks who are getting meagre salary, and you people acted/felt like brand ambassadors of the country, now the situation changed and you are feeling the heat. 9: It is not fair on the part of ET to highlight a usual process of a corporate company. There is a process in every firn, recruiting screens, probation periods and then non-performing alarms. Media is highlighting all these things during this recession only to scare the people.

Mr.Acer Right, I agree with you to some extent on company's processes. But you should also talk about the processes that have been let off for some managers gains. People who are good to their managers are the "best performers" these days. Good to see media bringing these issues into lime light. 17: What ever is you guys fight, it is sad that ppl are asked to leave... This is just a temporary phase. Once the economy is up then everything will be alright. Trainees are people who are impacted the most because company cant gain any returns from them till they become productive. I am just hoping that things will become alright in the due course.

19: There's more to this story. This year HCL has thrown out many freshers during the training programme also, stating that they were underperformers. There was quite a bit of ruckus regarding the performance standards of those thrown out & those retained. The company's been throwing out its trainees all the time, & still it says that "No HCLite will be thrown out... BLAH BLAH"

These IT firms keep 70% of billing and give 30% for employee salary and overhead and when there is slow down they donot wait they just fire and when economy picks they recruit. They operate on max margins. Unless IT guys unionize there is no escape
