HCL Not Actively Pursuing Its Hardware Unit Sale

However, the exponential rise in tablet computer sales in the country may attract some interest by the buyers. According to technology market research firm IDC, HCL presently is placed under top 5 tablet makers in India, and the tablet shipments are likely to grow this quarter. HCL's tablet business has been growing at 50 percent quarter-on-quarter, Chitale said, adding that hiving off the rest of the company's operations into separate units was boosting growth there as well. "These were different businesses with different destinies and being in one was restricting their growth."

HCL’s non-telecom distribution business, which had previously been tied to its branded products, has signed over a dozen logos in the last six months and grew 34 percent in the last quarter. Newer deals in the services business has also helped boost revenues - the enterprise services business grew 11 percent quarter-on-quarters.

"If required, if listing the units is the way to monetize, if that's the way we feel shareholder value will get created, it allows us a framework to be able to do it. As of now we have no plans of doing it, but should a need arise in future at least we will be ready," said Chitale. The company also expects the financial inclusion mandate, handed down by the finance ministry to banks, to boost its systems integration business. The division of the businesses is expected to be completed by end of the year.
