He was a witty writer and gained popularity with his work - Pennsylvania Gazette and Poor Richard's Almanack. He had a printing company and its success made him franchise printing press in other countries. He was probably the first person to promote and work out franchising to a great extent when the concept was relatively uncommon.

His investment were sharp and perfect, he and his wife collected cotton rags and invested in paper mills and gradually set up a wholesale paper business. He tried and succeeded in all his entrepreneurial ventures before the age of 40 and then retired to concentrate on his experiments, research and politics.
