Nemi Chand Jain, alias Chandraswami, who claimed to be a psychic, an astrologer and a faith healer, is Jain by religion and a firm believer of goddess Maa Kali. Since his childhood, he was interested in the study of Tantra. He spent his time in meditation and lived in the jungles of Bihar. After four years, he declared that he attained extraordinary powers known as “siddhis.” Although, Chandraswami is a spiritual guru, he had a tremendous network of powerful friends and this made him one of the country's top power brokers. He was a close associate, a spiritual adviser and political fixer of former PM Narsimha Rao for 25 years. The 1998 MC Jain commission report disclosed his supposed involvement in Rajiv Gandhi's assassination. A raid on his ashram by an income-tax had reportedly uncovered original drafts of payments coming upto $11 million, to arms dealer, Adnan Khashoggi. His foreign travel bill, before he was arrested, was reportedly estimated to be Rs 1.05 crore. The CBI lodged a cheating case and a case for his involvement in the plot to assassinate former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1996 and the ED also had registered as many as nine FERA cases against him.
