Global Cities That Will See Highest Water Demand by 2025


Shanghai, China:

Shanghai takes the third place on the list. It is a coastal city and therefore contains many rivers, canals, drains and lakes. The Huangpu River is Shanghai’s major water source with water from the Changjiang and groundwater supplementing. Water consumption by the city of Shanghai was approximately 10 billion cubic meters per year. In the city, water is used by three sectors namely, agriculture, industry and household. Shanghai is also estimated to see a rise in demand for water in the next few years.

Guangzhou, China:

Guangzhou, another city from China takes the fourth spot on the list. It is the third largest Chinese city and as per the 2010 census, the city had a population of 12.78 million. Guangzhou’s demand for water will also see a rise by 2025. It is noted that the governments in smaller cities are investing more in waste water treatment, following the lead of the bigger cities such as Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou.
