HYDERABAD: Software giant Microsoft is planning a massive research initiative in India. This research and development centre is likely to kick off next year and will create thousands of jobs in India.

Microsoft already has presence in India but the new development centre will be Microsoft's first real campus here. The centre will be housed on 42.25 acres of land in the Manikonda area, near Hyderabad's
Hi-Tec City, which is home to many leading Indian and western IT companies.

The software giant has already started construction work. Sources said the land is registered as Microsoft India R&D and that it will be ready some time next year, Silicon.com reported.

Microsoft also has a partnership with Wipro since five years for software development. The two further extended their partnership to BPO field in September 2003.

Wipro Spectramind has been providing customer and product support for multiple product lines across the retail and enterprise space from its Navi Mumbai facility.

Along with Microsoft, many other major software players are looking to India for ramping up their India operations. Oracle is also planning a centre in India and has bought a 10 acre plot of land at the Hi-Tec City.

Other companies that are also expanding their Indian operations are 3Com, Qualcomm as well as SAP.
