From Riches To Rags: 5 Indian Movie Stars

#2 Amitabh Bachchan:

Big B, Amitabh Bachchan is a legend of Bollywood with many unforgettable movies like Sholay, Deewaar, Zanjeer, Amar Akbar Anthony and the list never ends. Nobody in their wildest dreams has imagined that the angry young man would face financial crises.

Way back in 2000, his film production and event management company Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Ltd(ABCL) failed; and Big B faced a huge financial crisis. Founded in 1995, ABCL wanted to evolve into corporatized entertainment company similar to Hollywood studios. The company burst into lime light in 1996 when it brought Miss World Pageant event to India. ABCL had to face much criticism for it and was opposed by many women groups. Adding to it the event expected the local event manager to pay up $2 million, and including other costs the bill ran upto $5 million, which is about 17.5 crore.  The company, according to some modest estimates apparently lost 4 to 5 crores. One lead to the other and the Indian Board for Industrial and Financial Reconstruction declared ABCL as ‘sick’ company with a debt of $14million.

During his hardest times he was offered to be host of quiz show, Kaun Banega Crorepati. The show was instant hit with the masses, and also brought Big B some advertising contracts including ICICI’s ads. He also resumed his acting career and made many more memorable movies like Khakee, The Great Gatsby, Sarkar, BLACK and again the list never seems to end.
