Bangalore: Dell India has announced the launch of its Android run tablet Streak for the Indian consumers. The tablet is priced at
34,990 and is the harbinger of many more tablets to the Indian market.
The Streak sports a five inch capacitive multi-touch WVGA display and runs on Android 1.6 mobile OS. While other tablets running on Android OS use the upgraded versions (OlivePad VT100- Android 2.1, Samsung Galaxy Tab- Android 2.2), Dell Streak plans to get an Android 2.2 update before end of 2010.
On being asked what is taking Dell so long to update to the newer versions of the OS, Mahesh Bhalla, Executive Director & General Manager- Consumer, Dell India said that the Dell interface works best with Android 1.6 and they will come up with the updated versions soon.
The Dell Streak is powered by Qualcomm's 1GHz Snapdragon processor, making it the first in the world to use the processor. Dr. Sandeep Sibal, Country Manager and Vice President - Business Development, Qualcomm India and South Asia said on the launch of the Streak, "With the Streak, Dell opens up a new category of 3G mobile devices that creates a paradigm shift in the way millions of Indians will experience the internet. Powered by Qualcomm's 1GHz Snapdragon mobile processor which supports 3G HSUPA, the Streak offers a unique blend of powerful and power-efficient mobile computing and broadband communication."
The Dell Streak has a 5MP camera with LED flash and a VGA front facing camera that can be used for making video calls. Connectivity wise, the Streak supports Wi-Fi, 3G HSUPA and Bluetooth. It integrates social media apps like Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube. You can download various apps from Google Android Market.
Dell India has tied up with Tata DOCOMO through which postpaid subscribers can get 500MB of data usage free every month for a period of six months. The Streak is available for pre-booking at all Dell Exclusive stores, Tata DOCOMO 'Dive In' centers and authorized retailers.
With Samsung Galaxy Tab and Apple iPad coming soon to India, the tablet wars seem to be growing by each day. While the Streak has an upper hand in arriving in the Indian shores sooner than the other tablets, it stands the chance of losing market once the other players come to the market. The winner will be decided once others join the race.
