Deadliest Submarine Mishaps In The World

K-152 Nerpa

The K-152 is a nuclear-powered attack submarine, built by Russia. In the year 1993 the construction of this submarine began, but due to lack of funds the project had stopped. The Indian government funded for the construction of the sub, under an agreement which would let India use the sub for a period of 10 years.

The K-152 was introduced to the navy as INS Chakra in the year 2012.

The K-152, while operating in the Sea of Japan, saw a sudden release of Freon gas within the submarine. The breathing equipment failed to work causing several deaths within the container. 20 mariners died and an additional 21 were injured during the mishap. After the submarine Kursk incident, K-152 Nerpa in the year 2008 is the worst accident the Russian navy has ever faced.

The engineers later worked on the design and safety of the k-152. The submarine was later taken for sea trials several times, before it was handed over to India on lease.
