Corrupt Youngsters Eye Government Jobs In India: Study


Bangalore: Off late, India is in the news for many wrong things. This in a way sound unusual but then recently a study conducted by a group of researchers based in London reveals that a government job in India lures a corrupt youngster like magnet. It is also observed that youngsters who were cheats in school are more likely to choose for public services, reports Kounteya Sinha of TOI.

The study further discloses that most of the applicants for government jobs are not honest people and the same trend is observed even in government nurses. It also reveals how students showing preference towards government jobs don’t have the intention to work for people or their benefits.

The study was conducted by the duo of Harvard University and University of Pennsylvania among 662 students from across seven major universities in Bangalore. The students were given a set of tasks predictive of corrupt nature of the government workers. The result found that students who cheated during the task are more attracted to pick up a government job. The study was then published by the National Bureau of Economic Research.

According to Rema Hanna from Harvard University, the author of the paper who conducted three separate tests to reach the conclusion states that, cheating among the students was rampant with over one-third involved in such act. When it comes to career preferences, students who cheated on the dice game were 6.3 percent more likely to prefer a government job.
