Coming Soon: Unique Digital IDs

New Delhi: The Department of Information Technology (DIT) has initiated the process of assigning a unique identification (UID) to every Indian citizen. The UIDs help in the efficient delivery of social and welfare services.
The scheme, as such, will form the core database for delivery of all citizen-centric e-governance services. State governments will shoulder the responsibility of maintaining this database. The scheme is being implemented under the supervision of the Planning Commission in consultation with the ministry of home affairs, registrar general of census of India, ministry of rural development and ministry of finance.
A government source noted that though the implementation of the scheme has commenced, detailed operational procedures are still being worked out.
The purpose of UID is to create a central database of resident information and assign a unique identification number to each such resident in the country. The UID will provide a common medium for identifying all citizens by government agencies, thereby enhancing the efficiency and transparency in service delivery. The UID database would, therefore, create a unique reference for every citizen.
The Department of IT has already made a study of the available resident databases and prepared a concept note. A proposal to use the electoral roll database maintained by the election commission of India for creating the unique ID has been made in the concept note. The database, when functional, will provide a common link to all government departments.
