China's netizens are more than U.S. population

Bangalore: China's online population is now more than the entire population of U.S. according to the state-run Xinhua news agency, which referred to a report by the China Internet Network Information Center. China's online population had reached 338 million by the end of June after an increase of 40 million in the first six months of 2009.
Data released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIT) states that number of broadband Internet connections rose by 10 million to 93.5 million in the first half of the year. MIT further reported that more than 90 percent or 1,734 of China's villages had access to the internet by early June. About 95 percent of townships were connected to broadband, and 92.5 percent of natural villages had telephone coverage.
Vice President Lu Xiangdong of China Mobile said in the report that China's top three telecommunication operators - China Telecom, China Mobile and China Unicom - are expected to make major investment of about 280 billion Yuan ($40 billion) to improve their 3G network between 2009-2010.
Chinese government has tried to impose many restrictions on its netizens, especially in times of political upheavals like the one seen in northwest Xinjiang region in Tibet. Chinese government has also tried many times to impose media control as well as censored few political names on the internet.
