Can CIOs Become Business Leaders?

Step 3

Kerschberg’s third tip is that CIOs should not only advocate IT but business initiatives as well. In short CIOs need to maintain a balance between active participation of IT and business. The process might be quite painful as the CIOs need to completely immerse themselves into the middle of the corporate hierarchy and pick up the new communicative languge i.e. talk business. "CIOs who talk to business managers about software migrations and database updates will be seen as technicians and not as business leaders," he advises. "But CIOs, who manage how IT adds value to the business, by increasing efficiency or driving revenue, will showcase their savvy sense of business."
