BANGALORE: As part of its initiative towards consolidating itself in the e-learning arena, CMC Ltd. is preparing ground to make its foray into the e-learning space with its set of services and solutions. The company is in the process of designing e-learning solutions at its Hyderabad based R&D center. "Online education has a great potential in the Indian context. India wants to transform itself into a knowledge society and human resource development is going to play a key role. Continuous upgradation of knowledge/skill for a large number of people necessitate technology based solutions. Our end-to-end e-learning solutions will be directed towards this direction," said V Srinivasa Murthy, Regional manager, Education and Training at CMC – Hyderabad. Initially the company would use online education in the blended mode (online coupled with instructor led) in the short term and after that online component would be increased in the near future. "Basically we want to provide end-to-end solutions in the e-learning area including the areas of consultancy, implementation, content development, service offerings, etc. These are all the activities CMC is looking at as of now," he added. The vast movement towards e-learning is clearly motivated by the many benefits it offers. However much e-learning is praised and innovated, computers will never completely eliminate human instructors and other forms of educational delivery. What is important is to know exactly what e-learning advantages exist and when these outweigh the limitations of the medium. Like no other training form, e-learning promises to provide a single experience that accommodates the three distinct learning styles of auditory learners, visual learners, and kinesthetic learners. Other unique opportunities created by the advent and development of e-learning are more efficient training of a globally dispersed audience and reduced publishing and distribution costs, as Web-based training becomes a standard. E-learning also offers individualized instruction, which print media cannot provide, and instructor-led courses allow clumsily and at great cost. "In conjunction with assessing needs, e-learning can target specific needs and by using learning style tests, e-learning can locate and target individual learning preferences. We would be addressing both student community and corporate. We would also look at continuous upgradation of skills for professionals," he informed. Additionally, synchronous e-learning is self-paced. Advanced learners are allowed to speed through or bypass instructions that are redundant, while novices slow their progress through content, thereby eliminating frustration with them, their fellow learners and the course. In these ways, e-learning is inclusive of a maximum number of participants with a maximum range of learning styles, preferences, and needs. "We have a fairly big group working on this as part of Center for Education Technology in Hyderabad and once we unveil the e-learning programs, marketing will be done through our authorized training partners and business development teams spread all over the country," he added. While hardware maintenance continues to play a major role, CMC’s activities have advanced in many new directions. CMC is one of the leading System Integrators in the country with multi-faceted expertise in real-time systems, on-line systems, embedded systems, process control, transaction processing, image processing, data communications, networking, parallel architectures, e-Commerce technologies and e-Governance applications, etc. Integrated with this 'horizontal' expertise in IT is CMC’s ‘vertical’ expertise in a whole range of industries - both infrastructural, like power, coal, mining, oil and transport; as well as service, such as banking, education, insurance, securities, water management, e-Governance and law & order. The company has its R&D Center at Hyderabad, which undertook projects in the areas of contemporary technology. Software development in data communications and database management became one of its fastest growing activities.
